In 1999 when the people of Alabama elected a Republican Lt. Governor while having elected a Democratic Governor, the Democratically controlled Alabama State Legislature decided to take action. One week before the swearing in of the new Lt. Governor, they voted to remove all the important responsibilities of the Lt. Governor and allocate them elsewhere, leaving the Lt. Governor with no duties.
